This is Episode 25 of the The Pragati Podcast, hosted by Hamsini Hariharan and Pavan Srinath.
The 25th episode of the Pragati Podcast presents the 2017 Kim Jong Awards for Stupid Economic Ideas – terrible economic ideas that refused to die in 2017. Anupam Manur joins Pavan Srinath and Hamsini Hariharan to nominate the bad, the ugly and the worst in the Indian economy.
Ideas are stubborn, and bad ones even more so. In North Korea, the Kim family used bad economic ideas with a heavy role for the government, no rule of law, and no economic freedoms. This kept them in abject poverty and hunger, as they suffered famines, lacked access to basic human needs, and even today have little hope in sight.
You may think that bad economic ideas in India can’t push us to North Korean levels of misery — but they will not help us reach South Korean levels of prosperity either.
